Getting a tooth removed is never an enjoyable experience, but unfortunately, it is one that most Americans have to go through eventually—especially since most people have their wisdom teeth removed. Unfortunately, if a tooth is removed, you could ultimately have to deal with a painful dry socket.

The first thing you should do is avoid vigorous exercise or strenuous activities. You see, if you are too active immediately following tooth removal, the clot that forms to protect your extraction site could dislodge. Generally, you should simply rest for at least 24 hours after your tooth has been removed.

Similarly, you should remember to be gentle when you are rinsing out your mouth. Again, if you rinse too vigorously, you could dislodge your clot and expose the bone. In other words, please remember to brush gently. You may also want to consider using salt water.

Many dentists will warn about using straws and smoking after a tooth removal, but do you know why? The sucking motion can dislodge your clots as well. The same logic applies for spitting, although this is because you suck before you spit. When you have a tooth removed, we recommend eating food such as soup, yogurt, and smoothies.

Finally, our dentist will have placed gauze over your extraction points to help the blood clots form. It is best to not touch your extraction points because introducing germs and bacteria to these areas can cause infections.
