Enamel Erosion: The Details You’re Looking For

Posted .

Do you want to maintain a top-notch smile and oral health? If so, one dental problem you should avoid is enamel erosion. Enamel erosion can harm your teeth because it wears down the tooth enamel and promotes additional dental problems. In order to prevent enamel erosion, you need to know the details about it. Our dentists, Dr. Sudi Rafieian and Dr. Marshall Olech, are happy to share the details with you today on our blog.

Enamel erosion occurs when you consume acidic foods and drinks and the acid attacks the tooth enamel. If your teeth aren’t strong enough, the acid can wear down the enamel and make it weak and fragile. This can make the teeth vulnerable to tooth decay and even tooth cracks.

It’s best to prevent enamel erosion by limiting your consumption of acidic foods and drinks. Instead of eating and drinking acidic products, try eating and drinking more tooth-healthy foods and drinks, like dairy products, fruits and vegetables. You can also drink more water throughout the day to wash the acid away. If you do happen to consume something acidic, it’s best to wait 30 minutes to brush so you don’t help the acid damage the tooth enamel.

You can treat your enamel erosion by exposing your teeth to fluoride. Fluoride is a mineral that can strengthen and nourish the teeth. It can be found in fluoride toothpaste, fluoride mouthwash, tap water and professional fluoride treatments. You can also talk to your dentist about restorative dental treatments that can help restore the tooth enamel. Some treatments available include dental veneers, dental crowns and more.
