Choosing the Right Snacks for Your Teeth

Posted .

You may know that a healthy, balanced diet is very important to your health. However, did you know that some foods, such as cookies and candy, can hurt your teeth and gums? Conversely, there are other foods that can help your teeth and make them much stronger.

You might know that you should include plenty of calcium in your daily diet if you want to keep your teeth healthy and strong. Similarly, you probably know that milk and cheese are great sources of calcium. However, did you know that this common mineral can also strengthen your teeth and protect your enamel? On the other hand, acidic foods and drinks may actually hurt the protective layer of your teeth.

Another mineral vital to the health of your teeth is called phosphorous. Foods with phosphorus in them can actually replace the important minerals that may have been washed away by acid. Nuts, such as peanuts and cashews, and meats, are typically good sources of phosphorous. Nuts are also useful because they also have calcium.

Finally, please remember that it’s important for you to help your children follow a healthy, balanced diet. There are a few for snacks that your children may like. For example, they could enjoy low-fat yogurt that has berries in it, crunchy vegetables with a dip, watermelon, or cheese with apples.
